Backgammon: Gambling Luck Or Gambling Skill?
On the Internet you will find many articles that talk about backgammon as a game of skill and/or a game of luck.
Many ask about luck versus skill in backgammon. Some believe this game of backgammon has 5% luck, while some say 50% luck. Even others claim about 90% luck.
This topic has been the center of many conversations especially since backgammon has increased its popularity on the Internet. Gambling on the Internet has been so popular that even backgammon has been a big part of it.
So, what is the real role of luck and skill in backgammon?
Different players have different opinions. There are different games that you can compare to backgammon to differentiate whether backgammon is a game of skill or luck.
The truth of the matter is that, backgammon is both a game of skill and a game of luck. However, many players believe that backgammon is more a game of skill. In order to win a backgammon match you need to have more skills. This is proven in many tournaments.
But then again, luck is setting in, in every backgammon match. This comes in with the role of the dice in the game. If you are lucky enough you will get a good roll on your dice, however, if you are being unlucky you will definitely get a bad roll.
That is why many people are quoting, "lucky roll" to someone who is losing his or her touch and then eventually win the match after everybody thought that they were going to lose. Were they lucky? Yeah, maybe they were.
So it is really a cooperation of both. You need to have the proper skill to move your checkers and apply the right strategy for beating your opponent. And then you need to be lucky enough to have a good role with your dice and completely beat your opponent.
The following are two reasons why luck is always a part of backgammon:
1. The fun factor of backgammon comes from luck. This comes from the dice being unpredictable. Since no one can actually predict what will come out from a roll of the dice.
If someone rolls a double 6 in a match and wins the game, this is a very lucky roll for them. This good roll can actually save them from losing.
This is the part where the game is being fun and exciting. A player cannot know what will come out from their roll. If you take away the fun factor of this game, many players will probably not play this game anymore.
2. If there is no luck in this game, we can be sure that only the skilled players will have the chance to win most of the time. Time will come that even the skilled players will get bored since no one is trying to play this game anymore unless they have skill.
Hence, only few will play backgammon.
Those are two special reasons why backgammon needs both skill and luck.
